Cryocaust:
Frostbite was a crisp, clean white, the skin cracked, especially along the lines of a dead smile. The lips were a vibrant blue, the eyes a frozen sea green. The dead man wore a suit of finest silk, dyed red, and over his suit jacket a fox-fur coat. The orange looked warm, but Luke didn’t touch it. Instead he knelt beside the man, the baby David tucked under one arm, and he touched his fellow soldier on the cheek. Just lightly he brushed the soldier’s jawline, but the cold of his skin burned Luke, and he pulled his hand away. [100] Glancing at his fingertips Luke saw the white of dead flesh slowly replaced by new pink, like spreading warmth. He looked back to the soldier and saw cracks in his eyes. The ice had shattered at his touch, the eyes broken to shards but unmoved. Luke swallowed and looked around the cave, rock formations jutting formidably from the walls, red-stone and cold hard clay. Outside the wind whistled. Luke stood and wrapped his jacket more tightly around himself, tucking the child beneath. He reconsidered the fox-fur coat, surely warmer than his crimson blazer, but discarded the thought as quickly as it [200] had come: he wouldn’t rob the dead. 

Luke’s mind snagged and stuck on the clothes of the dead man, aside from the jacket and the man’s high-top boots they were dressed identically, same tailored dress pants, same silk shirt, same hue of red. They were each members of the Red Guard and they wore the same uniform. Luke hoped they wouldn’t meet the same fate.

               
Michael had once told her that the Goddess herself smiled less prettily. When Jaine July smiled it lit up her eyes, brought them alive with sunshine. Her silver-grey hair was swept behind her ears and [300]
